2007_ATHIS Sanitary Unit

The Sanitary Unit project is the result of the National Public Competition for Architecture and Urbanism for the Preliminary Design for the Sanitary Unit Prototype aimed at Technical Assistance for Social Interest Housing (ATHIS) launched in September 2020. The Competition, promoted by the Architecture Council, it is part of a set of initiatives by the Council to promote architecture through design solutions that seek to solve the low levels of sanitation in the dwellings of low-income families while providing essential hygiene conditions. Sanitation and hygiene is even more necessary in the pandemic context.

ALTA’s proposal was selected as the winner among 500 national submissions, along with four other proposals, in November 2020.

The project includes a washing tank, cistern, shower, toilet, hygienic shower and washbasin, being designed to have a direct connection with the existing dwellings. The proposal aims to optimize space and construction, resulting in a lean design with easy transport and feasible execution.
The project is divided into two main components: bathroom and laundry area. The connection area between the Sanitary Unit and the residence also functions as a service area with a washbasin and space for a washing machine. In the main part of the project there are bathroom equipments: shower, toilet and hygienic shower. Above the bathroom, supported by a steel structure, is the water tank that supplies the entire Sanitary Unit. The washing tank is located outside, but protected from the weather.

The Unit was designed with Light Steel Frame structure frames, with the aim of making the construction more agile and without construction waste. The Light Steel Frame structure is divided into three modules executed off-site site and transported separately, the join of the modules is executed in the construction site.

Foundations have a dual function: they distribute the construction loads to the supporting soil and it also functions as the sewage treatment system. Blackwater is treated with a biodigester and greywater is treated with a decantation process. The final destination of the effluents is through a Contructed Wetland built next to the Sanitary Unit, this complementary system allows the correct disposal of the final product of the treated sewage, thus avoiding contamination of the soil and groundwater. Rainwater is captured by the roofs of the Sanitary Unit and is reused using a cistern.
After the conclusion, the copyright of the project is assigned to CAU-RS, which can use it in the way that it finds most effective.
